Cannabis Legalization: A Province-to-Province Guide

As of October 17th, 2018, marijuana (also often referred to as cannabis) is legal across Canada. As a result, Canadians will be able to lawfully possess up to 30 grams, though the exact laws and regulations, including possession limitations, may differ slightly depending on which Province you live.

BRITISH COLUMBIA
In British Columbia, you must be 19 years of age or older to be able to purchase cannabis. Sales locations include both private and government retail and online stores. You will be able to possess up to 30 grams of cannabis while out in public, or 1,000 grams at home. It is prohibited in vehicles, around children, as well as wherever tobacco is restricted.

ALBERTA
In Alberta, you must be 18 years of age or older to be able to purchase cannabis. Sales locations include both private and government retail and online stores. You will be able to possess up to 30 grams of cannabis while out in public, while there are no limits to how much you possess at home. It is prohibited in vehicles, around children, as well as wherever tobacco is restricted.

SASKATCHEWAN
In Saskatchewan, you must be 19 years of age or older to be able to purchase cannabis. Sales locations include both private and government retail and online stores. Possession is limited to 30 grams in public, and it can only be used in private residences.

MANITOBA
In Manitoba, you must be 19 years of age or older to be able to purchase cannabis. Sales locations include both private retail and online stores. Possession is limited to 30 grams in public, while there are no limits to how much you possess at home. It is strictly prohibited in public places.

ONTARIO
In Ontario, you must be 19 years of age or older to be able to purchase cannabis. Sales locations include private retail stores or online government sales. Possession is limited to 30 grams, while there are no limits to how much you possess at home. Currently, it can only be used in private residences. Should new legislation pass, that would then allow consumption wherever tobacco use is legal.

QUEBEC
In Quebec, you must be 18 years of age or older to be able to purchase cannabis. Sales locations include government retail or online sales. Possession is limited to 30 gram in publics, and no more than 150 grams when at home. It is permitted in both private residences as well as public areas in which tobacco is permitted, while it is prohibited in health and educational institutions, as well as prohibited around children.

NEW BRUNSWICK
In New Brunswick, you must be 19 years of age or older to be able to purchase cannabis. Sales locations include government retail or online sales. Possession is limited to 30 gram in publics, while there are no limits to how much you possess at home. It is currently only permitted in private residences.

NOVA SCOTIA
In Nova Scotia, you must be 19 years of age or older to be able to purchase cannabis. Sales locations include government retail or online sales. Possession is limited to 30 gram in publics, while there are no limits to how much you possess at home. It is prohibited wherever tobacco is restricted, and if you are caught disobeying those restrictions you could face up to a $2,000 fine.

PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND
In Prince Edward Island, you must be 19 years of age or older to be able to purchase cannabis. Sales locations include government retail or online sales. Possession is limited to 30 grams, while there are no limits to how much you possess at home. Currently, use is only permitted to private residences.

NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR
In Newfoundland and Labrador, you must be 19 years of age or older to be able to purchase cannabis. Sales locations include government online sales or private retail sales. Possession is limited to 30 grams, while there are no limits to how much you possess at home. Use is limited to private residences.

YUKON
In the Yukon, you must be 19 years of age or older to be able to purchase cannabis. Sales locations include government retail or online sales and private retail sales. Possession is limited to 30 grams, and it is currently permitted in private residences and adjoining properties.

NORTHWEST TERRITORIES
In the Northwest Territories, you must be 19 years of age or older to be able to purchase cannabis. Sales locations include government online and telephone sales. Possession is limited to 30 grams in public, and 150 grams at home. It is currently permitted in private residences as well as areas where tobacco use is allowed, while it is prohibited in areas frequented by children.

NUNAVUT
In Nunavut, you must be 19 years of age or older to be able to purchase cannabis. Sales locations include government online and telephone sales. Possession is limited to 30 grams in public, while there are no limits when at home. It is currently permitted in private residences as well as designated public spaces. It is prohibited in vehicles, areas frequented by children or large crowds, as well as non-smoking areas.
